Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command, said weekend, that it had arrested about 82 candidates of the just- concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in the state for alleged involvment in examination malpractices. The exam, held last Saturday in about 108 centres across the state, however, recorded no violence. State Corps Commandant, Aboluwoye Akinwande, in a statement by the Command Public Relations Officer, Kareem Olanrewaju, said the candidates were arrested from different centres across the state for cutting corners during the examination. Akinwande said, 30 candidates were arrested in various centres in Abeokuta, nine in Ewekoro local government, while others were arrested at Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU centre, and MolusiCollege in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of the state. “Some of them were caught using their phones while others were in possession of prohibited materials like books, palm tops, Scientific calculators among others. The Corps will take appropriate action on the candidates caught cheating. "The first thing is that they have been made to fill relevant forms. Investigation will be conducted, that will determine their culpability and then we can decide on their trial. Necessary information about them have been collected. “Apart from the arrest, no violence was recorded in any of the 108 examination centres. The large number of arrest recorded was as a result of effective coverage by Civil Defence. They were taken by surprise as they thought it was business as usual. “The Corps will continue to do its best at all time to ensure examination malpractices are reduced to the minimum if not eradicated. We will continue to appreciate the support of candidates, parents and other stakeholders,” the Corps Commander said. VNTI

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT,Thursday, gave notice of the intention of its members to embark on strike from June 1, this year to protest the alleged refusal of 18 state governments in the country to pay teachers the N18,000 minimum wage as well as their 27.5 percent enhancement allowance. National President of the union, Michael Alogba- Olukoya, said the NUT was also opposed to the scrapping of the National Examination Council, NECO, as well as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, by the Federal Government. However, on the minimum wage, the union said the affected states include Benue, Cross River, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu, Ekiti, Osun and Ogun. Others are Oyo, Edo, Nassarawa, Zamfara, Plateau, Taraba, Borno, Kogi, Niger and Sokoto. Alogba-Olukoya who spoke at the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the union in Asaba, the Delta State capital, noted that the NUT had observed “the increasing frustration and reluctance of some state governments in some cases to pay the 27.5 percent Teachers Enhance Allowance, TEA, as well as the refusal to pay the N18,000 minimum wage,” adding that “it is the resolute opinion of NEC that such states must have resolved to take the NUT for a ride, while holding in contempt, the authorities of the Federal Government through its relevant ministries.” Alogba-Olukoya then said that the NUT decided to commence a stay-at-home strike in the affected states if affected governments failed to implement the N18,000 minimum wage as well as pay the TEA with effect from the June 1. He warned that the state wings of the NUT would not be allowed to call off the strike once started until their demands were met. The NUT, however, urged its state branches to abide by the decision instead of embarking on strike before the new deadline. On teachers’ minimum qualification, the union further said it was committed to the provisions of the National Policy on Education which prescribes Nigeria Certificate in Education, NCE, as the minimum teaching qualification in the country. ------------ SOURCE : VNTI

The event which is third in the series made the 77 graduates smile home with N 500,000 each. The previous first class graduates went home with a car each, but this year the number rose from 15 to 77 so Dr. Olukoya settled for cash, which they could use to further their education or start something. The breakdown of the graduates showed that University of Lagos (UNILAG) top the list with 12 graduates which cut across various disciplines, followed by University of Ibadan with nine of such graduates while one is from Central University College, Accra, Ghana.
